Time To Shed The Weight!

Obesity in dogs and cats is on the rise with a worrying number of patients coming through the door having put on weight gradually over the years. Did you know that overfeeding your cat by just 3 biscuits a day can cause obesity by the time they’re 5 years old? It doesn’t take much, but by overeating and under-exercising, our pets are at risk of obesity and the health risks that come with it.

Dogs and cats that are overweight and obese are at increased risk of:

  • Osteoarthritis
  • Diabetes
  • Heart Disease
  • Urinary Problems (including blocked bladders)
  • High Blood Pressure
  • Cancer

As well as looking at your pet’s weight, we assess their Body Condition Score (BCS) to help determine if they are under or overweight. Using the chart below, we feel their ribs & fat deposits and look at their body shape to see where they fall on the chart. A normal BCS is between 4 and 5, but many pets are coming in at 6-7 which is on the way to morbid obesity.

Did you know that our nurses are trained to be able to help your pets lose weight? They run FREE clinics to give you all the help and advice you’ll need to help get your pets back to a healthy weight, and to stay there! So, if you think your cat or dog may be overweight, please give us a call and book in with one of our nurses who will be happy to help you get started!
